CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP • Beginners & experienced writers welcome
Live & In-Person For 6 Weeks • Beginning July 17th, 2023
Monday Evenings from 6-8pm PST • Yucca Valley, CA
The Hi Desert Writers Workshop creates a space where everyone is encouraged in their writing and all participants can write if they choose to do so.
Our method is based upon the Amherst Writers & Artists Workshop Method, which was developed by Pat Schneider.
Affirmations of the Method
Everyone has a strong, unique voice.
Everyone is born with creative genius.
Writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or educational level.
The teaching of craft can done without damage to a writer's original voice or artistic freedom.
A writer is someone who writes.
Who's leading this thing, anyway?
Hi! I'm Cooper Gillespie, MFA.
AMherst writers & artists method
Non-Hierarchical spirit: All of us are peers in writing, no matter our writing experience or education level. The atmosphere of the group is one of respect and discipline, and we recognize and honor each other as fellow writers at all times. This keeps us safe and allows us to take risks with our work.
Confidentiality: What is shared within the group remains within the group, safeguarding privacy and trust.
Exercises are suggestions: Even if our writing appears unrelated to the suggested exercise, it is still considered a success. The paramount goal is that each individual follows their innermost creative impulse.
All writing is approached as fiction, even if drawn from personal memories: Following our collective writing session, we take turns reading aloud what we have written, acknowledging it as fiction. We respond to the narrator, characters, and speaker within the material, avoiding assumptions about your personal identity and experiences. This fosters a space for your writing to be seen as art and for creative choices to emerge from your imagination or recollections.
This approach also safeguards against fellow writers assuming the role of "armchair psychologists." Our focus remains on the words written on the page, rather than exploring your personal experiences or emotions that may be hidden within the material. Sharing your personal insights is entirely optional, empowering you to maintain the level of openness and vulnerability that feels comfortable to you.
Feedback emphasizes strengths: Since the group's creations are freshly conceived in our generative workshops, our discussions revolve around what resonated with us, what we enjoyed, and what left a lasting impression. By recognizing what already engages our readers, we can refine our work during the editing process.
In other writing experiences, such as revision circles, we prepare thoughtful and balanced responses in advance, focusing on what is strong and impactful in the writing, as well as areas where improvement and depth can be explored.
DESIGNED FOR all experience levels!
“Whether your purpose for writing is artistic expression, communication with friends and family, the healing of the inner life, or achieving public recognition for your art, the foundation is the same: the claiming of yourself as an artist/writer and the strengthening of your writing voice through practice, study, and helpful response from other writers.”
—Pat Schneider

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS I HEAR OFTEN
Do I have to write in a specific genre?
Absolutely not. You can write poetry, nonfictions, libretto, plays, songs, essays, short stories... the sky's the limit. We do treat all work as fictional, however (even if it really happened). This fosters a space for your writing to be seen as art and for creative choices to emerge from your imagination or recollections.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, full and partial scholarships are available. If you'd like to attend the workshop but do not have the financial means to pay the full tuition, please email me with the subject line "Scholarship" and tell me how much you can afford to pay and why you'd like to join the workshop.
Is there a cap on how many people can participate?
Yes. Each workshop is limited to no more than 8 participants.
What will I learn that I can’t find on free sites and YouTube?
There is no substitute for the magic that occurs when writers come together in community, write, and share with each other.
Do I have to share my work with the group?
Sharing is entirely optional. You decide what you feel comfortable with.
What if I can’t make the class live?
No worries. There are no refunds for missed classes, however.
Can I bring someone to one of the sessions who is not in the workshop (like my spouse or my kids)?
No. To maintain the creative safety of the group, only registered participants are able to attend.
